Henrie O series

Set Sail For Murder From Booklist
Retired newswoman Henrie O Collins sails on a two-week Baltic cruise to help out an old friend and former boyfriend, James Lennox, who is concerned that someone is trying to kill his wife, documentary filmmaker Sophia Montgomery. James believes that there have already been two attempts on Sophia's life, and he suspects that one of her second husband's children is out to kill her because she controls when they will receive their inheritance. The whole family is required to go on the cruise, during which Sophia will announce her decision regarding the inheritance. James wants Henrie O to help protect Sophia, who believes James' concerns are ridiculous, and to determine which child is the would-be killer. Framed by descriptions of the lovely Baltic ports of call, Hart's seventh in the Henrie O series combines engaging subordinate characters and surprising plot twists with the charms of Henrie O herself, who grapples with her past feelings for James while trying to solve the case. ~ Sue O'Brien

A Romantic Times 4 Star book
In the tradition of Agatha Christie, Hart’s characters find murder and mystery while traveling—but in this case on the high seas. This terrific whodunit will keep you guessing with its extensive use of red herrings and suspicious characters.

Summary: Retired newspaper reporter Henrie O agrees to Help old friend and lover Jimmy Lennox when he fears that his wife, Sophia, may be in grave danger. Sophia has had close calls with some serious “accidents,” and Jimmy believes that one of her stepchildren from a former marriage may be trying to kill her. Sophia is managing their trust funds, and they would like full control.

Henrie accompanies Jimmy, Sophia and the stepchildren on a cruise to attempt to discover the guilty party. But Sophia is suspicious of Henrie, believing that she wants to steal Jimmy away. When Sophia nearly dies in another “accident,” she blames Jimmy. Can Henrie expose the murderer before he or she succeeds in killing Sophia?

From I Love a Mystery
Carolyn Hart combines a clever locked room mystery with a beautifully detailed travelogue of a Scandinavian cruise in SET SAIL FOR MURDER.

The Riordan clan is the epitome of dysfunctional: Alex, who wants to be an entrepreneur but is constantly being taken in by get-rich-quick schemes that fail; his avaricious wife, Madge, who has never seen a piece of jewelry (or shoes, bags or outfits, for that matter) that she hasn’t wanted; Rozie, possibly the nicest of the bunch but mercurial in temperament and more subtle in her dealings with Henrie; Kent, a boiling cauldron of misery because the girl he fell in love with allowed herself to be bought off by his wicked stepmother; Val, a fragile alcoholic who is clearly miserable and possibly suicidal and their aunt, Evelyn, who has watched over them since their mother’s death when they were still small children.

Henrie O. Collins steps into this maelstrom, drawn by a plea from an old friend, Jimmy Lennox. Jimmy and Henrie O were more than friends after their respective spouses died, but Henrie didn’t say yes when Jimmy proposed and he went on to marry Sophia Montgomery, the wicked stepmother mentioned above, who was, herself, widowed when Frank Riordan died and left her in charge not only of his children but of their vast inheritance. Now Alex, the eldest, is about to turn thirty and that could trigger a distribution of wealth – but it’s up to Sophia, whom the children heartily despise. Jimmy is afraid one or more of the children is intent upon insuring his, her, or their, immediate wealth by doing away with Sophia. He calls on former fellow reporter Henrie O to investigate while he tries to protect Sophia.

As for the travelogue, either Carolyn Hart is a superb researcher (I’m sure she is) or she took the cruise she so vividly describes. A lot of color, a little history and some personal details bring SET SAIL FOR MURDER to glowing life. Carolyn Hart keeps you guessing as first one, then another, of the Riordan clan illicit suspicion! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
